“Doing this session with Nicki was something I didn't know I needed until the session was happening. I don't usually like being in front of the camera, but felt like doing something for myself while my husband was deployed. Though it was freezing outside during the session, the confidence I felt kept me going!
I have had Type 1 Diabetes for over 30 years, and, for many of those years, I hid my disease as best as I could. In fact, one of the reasons I decided to start using the type of insulin pump that I use is because it can be easily hidden under clothes, unlike the typical tubed type, which sat on my hip like a beeper. During this session, I knew that my pump would be visible and decided that I would just let it be…I didn't want to focus my attention on this life-sustaining device. I didn't think it was to visible under my outfit, but I definitely noticed it when I saw the images. Instead of feeling embarrassed, though, I felt proud. I have been battling this disease for decades, trying to not let it define me. For the first time, seeing myself with my pump made me happy about how far I've come since I was diagnosed in the late '80s.”
