ON AN OVERCAST DAY IN 2013, I STEPPED OUT OF MY OWN COMFORT ZONE AND IN FRONT OF THE LENS…
My own personal boudoir session required me to be vulnerable, brave, and trusting as another talented photographer captured my story of changing curves and growing belly. It was an afternoon to treat myself. It was a love letter to my person. It was ours and it was all mine at the same time. It was a reward. It was the expression of a sexiness, femininity, and youth I don’t feel everyday, but relive when I revisit these images.
I SHOT MY FIRST BOUDOIR SESSION ON MEDIUM FORMAT FILM IN MY DINGY COLLEGE APARTMENT…
I used painter’s bulb clamps and an open refrigerator door for backlighting! We didn’t actually refer to the session as “boudoir” and it would be years before that title became a widely recognized photo genre. It would be even longer before it evolved into its own movement transcending race, gender, age, and sexual boundaries!
Several years later, I would be hired for my first formal boudoir commission, shot and directed based on midcentury pin-up! Needless to say, I became enamored with the boudoir niche and its connection to the history of art movements which embody female expression.
In addition to being a photographer, I’m a mom of 4 young kids, I’m fluent in sarcasm, addicted to coffee, and love all things science. My family recently moved from Hawaii to Eastern Massachusetts, so I could show them where mommy grew up!
